Dermatology Center of the Rockies - Longmont, CO

POSITION:                Histology Technician – Part time (2-3 days every other week)
                                    Individual must be a team player and have a positive attitude

Job Summary:     Responsible for preparing frozen section microscope slides, complying with established policies and procedures, OSHA policies and compliance, and CLIA compliance. This position is also responsible for scheduling patients and monitoring OSHA compliance for the clinic, as well as pre-certifying insurance for MOHS patients. When time permits, this position is responsible for medical assistant duties. Assures patient and office confidentiality, and performs other duties as may be designed from time-to-time.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sets up the staining station.
  • Performs quality assurance checks on cryostat and refrigerator; fills out all appropriate log sheets.
  • Follows appropriate procedures in processing in MOHS specimens.
  • Makes frozen section slides for each MOHS case promptly and in a timely fashion.
  • Rotates and freshens staining solutions throughout the day as needed.
  • Informs the patient of their progress as directed by the physician.
  • Records the surgery record onto patients’ charts and into the logbook.
  • Documents in each patient’s chart all activity, i.e., when surgery is scheduled, whether antibiotics have been called into the pharmacy, etc.

 

After all patients are negative and cutting is done for the day (or during any period of time when waiting to prepare slides), the following tasks can be performed:

  • Prepares the physician’s call-back card.
  • Sharpens knives.
  • Orders supplies.
  • Files microscope slides.
  • Returns and responds to any call received by the end of that same working day.
  • Maintains computer scheduling.
  • Schedules patients.
  • Pre-certifies insurance and obtains all necessary insurance authorizations for each MOHS patient.
  • Checks the physician(s) pathology books and appropriately notes when the patient is scheduled, when they were called, and whether it has been dictated.
  • Orders the biopsy slide for all upcoming surgeries. Returns biopsy slides to source when surgery is completed.
  • Ensures cleaning and daily operational maintenance of equipment, i.e., oiling of cryostat, changing filter of fume hood, etc. Notifies supervisor of any equipment problems so he/she can arrange timely service to correct or to schedule preventative maintenance.
  • Covers the stains when done each day.
  • Conducts telephone reminder to the next day’s surgery patients.
  • Labels and files Kodachrome slides.
  • Assists with medical assistants as needed placing patients in rooms, taking histories, going in with the physician and assisting with biopsies and general dermatology tasks, cleaning rooms for the next patient, cleaning instruments, and logging in pathology specimens. Fills in as needed to assist other physicians.
  • Knowledgeable of front office duties and procedures.

Histotechnologist/Histotechnician - Bella Derma - Glenwood Springs, CO

Histotechnologist/Histotechnician to gross and process skin tissue specimens for in house pathologist to examine. Manage daily activities in the histology laboratory.

Must be able to assist with the development of a documentation database for the CAP 2018 Laboratory Accreditation Program; compile laboratory procedures to push the laboratory to achieve the highest standard of excellence in patient care.

Must collaborate with the Medical Director to compile quality assurance, safety, and consistent standards for staff to maintain service of excellence.

Perform immunohistochemical staining, quality control, and data review for the laboratory.

Identify inconsistencies in the data and work closely with medical director to come up with a corrective action.

Histotechnician - Centennial Pathologists, PC - Denver, CO

Position Available: Histotechnician

Job status: Part-time (daily at 3:00pm, 2-3 hours per day) Company Overview:

Centennial Pathologists, PC provides staffing coverage for a specialized laboratory setting, located in the Denver Tech Center, which provides pathology services for Gastroenterology practices in Colorado. Due to the nature of the company, a person is able to attain a broad experience and exposure to a variety of responsibilities and is able to have close interaction with pathologists. Position Summary: The Histotechnician performs a variety of technical procedures that result in the preparation of slides necessary for the pathologist to make a diagnosis from a patient’s tissue sample. This is a part- time position working weekdays (M-F) with the start time typically about 3:00pm and will be consistent with 2-3 hours daily.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Embedding- Embedding patient's tissue samples in paraffin molds.
  • Microtomy- Producing high quality microscopic slides from patients tissue samples.
  • Hazardous Waste Regulations and disposal.
  • Contribute to the overall lab safety.
  • Production of Routine, IHC, and Special Stain slides adhering to established protocol.
  • Maintain integrity of patient specimens at all times, with a high level of accuracy.
  • Effective communication with co-workers and management.
  • Following all quality and regulatory standards required in performing tasks.
  • Exercises good judgment in conflict resolution. -Maintain a clean workplace.
  • Demonstrate initiative, dependability, cooperation and diplomacy in all situations in order to maintain a high standard of customer service to the patient.
  • No Supervisory Duties -Other duties as assigned.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Work experience of at least 1 year
  • Working knowledge of Histology procedures (embedding, microtomy, tissue processing, fixation, decalcification, routine H&E, special stains, and Immunohistochemistry staining).
  • Solid understanding of operating and maintenance to all equipment in the Histology Laboratory.
  • Ability to consistently provide accurate work and to pay close attention to detail.



PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

  • Operating the following instrumentation:
    • Dako and Thermo stainers
  • -Cutting and embedding GI specimens

EDUCATION

1. Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program

  • Training and documented proficiency in Histology (NACCLS program or OJT).
  • Attends continuing education activities and / or certification to maintain current knowledge and skills.

OR

2. At least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 24semester hours of science courses or 24 semester hours of medical technology courses),


AND

    • one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory

OR

3. an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 24 semester hours of biology and chemistry(must include credit hours in both),

AND

  • one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory
    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Current certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or be eligible for and successfully complete ASCP certification
