Session 1: Friday Afternoon, April 26, 2019

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM, Presentation

1. A Day in the Life of a Forensic Pathologist (1.5 CEU credit hours)
Dr. Jim Caruso, MD, Denver, Chief Medical Examiner
This presentation will give a background of the practice of forensic pathology and the state of the background of the medical examiner and coroner systems (and the difference between the two), the differences between hospital autopsies and forensic autopsies, finishing with some interesting case examples to illustrate the daily workload and case flow.

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM, Presentation

2. Lung Pathology for Histotechs (1.5 CEU credit hours)
Dr. Carlyne Cool, MD, National Jewish Hospital
Histology is critical to the diagnosis of disease in lung tissue specimens. This presentation will demonstrate the role of the histology lab in the treatment of patients with diseases of the lung.

Session 2: Saturday Morning, April 27, 2019

8:00 AM - 9:30 AM, Presentations

3. Histologic Considerations for Digital Pathology Implementation
(1.5 CEU credit hours)
Ms. Liz Chlipala, BS, HTL (ASCP) QIHC, Premier Laboratory, LLC
This talk will discuss the effects of the widespread introduction of digital imaging systems into histology labs. Considerations covered will include: pre-analytics, quality control, and work flow effects, among others.

4. Differential Diagnosis of Gynecologic Pathology: Gross Examination to Microscopic Findings

(1.5 CEU credit hours)
Dr. Miriam Post, MD, University of Colorado Denver, Department of Pathology
Examples of significant differential diagnoses including both gross and microscopic findings, as well as the variety of immunohistochemical and other special stains which can be used to reach the best diagnosis will be reviewed.

9:30 AM  -  10:00 AM, Break

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM, Presentations

5. Practical Aspects of Digital Pathology in Implementation (1.5 CEU credit hours)
Mr. John Wellbank, Thermo-Fisher
Histology labs will be faced with increasing demand to digitize images of tissue specimens. This presentation will cover the technology of digital imaging systems, including the development of imaging technology to current practice and future considerations.

6. Classification of Pediatric Brain Tumors  (1.5 CEU credit hours)
Dr. Ahmed Gilani, MD, Children’s Hospital of Colorado
Dr. Gilani will discuss the diagnosis and classification of brain tumors in pediatric patients.

11:30 PM  -  1:30 PM  Lunch & CSH Business Meeting

Session 3: Saturday Afternoon, April 27, 2019

1:30  PM -  2:30 PM, Presentations

7. The Names of the Stains (1.0 CEU credit hours)
Ms. Jane Parr, BS, HT (ASCP), National Jewish Hospital, and Ms. Jean Mitchell, BS, HT (ASCP), Newcomer Supply
This presentation will focus on "the names of the stains", and an introductory lesson in histology history. Harris, Gomori, Gill, Mayer and Van Gieson are common names and stains spoken on a daily basis by histologists in their every-day working laboratory environment. But what do we really know about the names and these people we talk about every day?  We will explore a name, add a face and detail the history to “the names of the stains” that have been our friends for many years but who we have never been introduced to.

8. IHC Chromogens: The Many Colors of Immunohistochemistry (1.0 CEU credit hours)
Ms. Liz Chlipala, BS, HTL (ASCP) QIHC, Premier Laboratory, LLC
Alternative chromogens can be useful to visualize aspects of IHC staining when aspects of tissue samples can be difficult to distinguish from standard brown and red chromogens. This presentation will discuss the different chromogens that are available today ad cases in which they are useful. Technical considerations for the use of these chromogens will be discussed.

2:30 PM  -  3:00 PM  Break

3:00 PM  - 4:30 PM, Presentation

9.  Renal Pathology for Histotechs (1.5 CEU credit hours)
Dr. Lian Zhang, MD, University of Colorado Denver Department of Pathology
Kidney biopsies are often some of the most challenging to process in the histology lab. Dr. Zhang will demonstrate the diagnostic utility of the stains performed on renal biopsy specimens.
